When I was 19 years old, I wanted to buy a pair of really funky shoes, but I didn’t because my boyfriend thought they were weird. For a long time afterwards, I continued to dress in a way that pleased others more than it pleased myself (although, I wasn’t really aware that I was doing so).
It’s only been during the last ten years or so that I’ve started to find “my style”. My biggest inspirations have been my friend Mandy, and my cousins, Samantha and Caillianne. They all dress how they want to dress, wearing what pleases them, with intention, with grace, and with a sense of fun and confidence. I feel like I have finally landed on my style, and I get a thrill from embracing items that are out of the ordinary, and that make people stop and say, “Nice socks!” (today at the airport), or “Great shoes!” (today at the restaurant), or “You look like a walking painting!” (about a year ago, downtown Calgary). Most of all, I get a thrill from choosing things that please me.
